Controlled/Living polymerizations of such monomers as methyl methacrylate ( MMA ), methyl acrylate ( MA ) and styrene were successfully carried out using NBS as either an iniferter or an initiator for atom transfer radical polymerization ( ATRP ). The kinetic studies showed that the molecular weights ( Mn ) increased linearly with conversion, also eopolymers were further synthesized using the originally polymerized polymer as a macro-iniferter, which indicated that NBS was a new type iniferter. And it was the first time CuBr2/Bipy was added to the iniferter polymerization system ,which made iniferter polymerization more controllable. Meanwhile, the thesis detailed the research on NBS function as an initiator for ATRP, as a result, the linearity of kinetics plots of ln( [M]o/[M] ) vs time and molecular weights ( Mn ) vs monomer conversions proved the controlled/living radical polymerization process. The polydispersities ( Mw/Mn ) for either styrene bulk polymerization or MMA polymerization with anisole solution at various monomer conversions ranged from 1.1 to 1.25, indicating the well-controlled polymerization.NBS could be introduced as both an iniferter and an initiator in ATRP, which offered theoretically evidence for the similar background of iniferter and ATRP polymerization.
