The Study On Chinese And Western Chairs' Comparison And The Source Of Their Disparity

With the communication and collision of Chinese and Western culture, the trend of economic globalization and the international situation of pluralistic world culture have determined the unavoidable contradiction of Chinese and Western furniture culture. In order to study the comparison of Chinese and Western chairs, and to probe into the source of their difference, and then to inspire the development of domestic chairs' design, this article adopted the approach of analysis and comparison, analysed and compared the Chinese and Western chairs' history and their material, structure , appearance form, function ,etc, and then concluded such difference as their history's keeping and innovative, the materials' unity and variety, appearance form's relying mainly on line type or on size and the function's pursuing mental realm or enjoying, then studied the source of their disparity from life style, culture background, aesthetic standards, production technology etc, finally it made the past served the present and made foreign things served china, and put forward four methods of contemporary Chinese chair's design: materials' pluralism, structure's diversification, modelling elements' symbolization, function modernization, and pointed out the developing direction of the contemporary chair design and more extensive furniture design.
