Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), which is a kind of hazardous substance for its' nondegradable, carcinogenicity, accumulation and nonvolatility characteristics, has external effect on the environment. Due to its extensive distribution and long duration, it is hazardous to human's health. The environmentalists have focused on the problem for a long time, and have invented and developed many analytical methods. But in our country, studies mainly focus on PAHs' resource, transfer and distinguish. It still hasn't a standard analytical method of PAHs. The aim of the study was to develop a rapid analytical procedure for the detection of PAHs in seawater and sediment. In the study, 7 of the 16 EPA PAHs were analyzed. Ensuring the high precision of the detection method beforehand, evaluating the detectors, the extraction solvents and the extraction methods to assess theirs applications for the extraction and analysis of PAHs in seawater and sediment. For HPLC-UV has the advantage of detecting the PAHs,it was selected as the detector. On extraction method selection, the direct solvent extraction method, the Soxhlet extraction method and the Ultrasonic extraction method were campared, and the Ultrasonic extraction method was selected for its quick and simple steps. Then, use the HPLC-UV detector and the Ultrasonic extraction method, 7 PAHs standard samples were analyzed to assess the PAHs qualitative determination and quantitative determination. The recoveries of seawater and sediment are :naphthalene 73. 0% and 75. 3%, phenanthrene79. 2%and78. 0%, fluoranthene 88. 1% and 80. 7%, pyrene 73. 8% and 70. 2%, chrysene 77. 6% and 72. 8%, benzo[k]fluoranthene 87. 6% and 83.6%, benzo[a]pyrene 120. 3% and 110. 0%, respectively. The results indicated that the HPLC-UV analytical method is suitable for the analysis of the 7 PAHs in seawater and sediment. Then seawater and sediment samples were analyzed to prove the results.Based on the study, the author has developed a HPLC analytical method for PAHs in seawater and sediment. It may provide scientific datum for the redaction of laboratoryanalytical method.
