Based on the phenol-aldehyde resin modified by rosin which is a kind of renewable resources, a new type of epoxy resin was synthesized. Through orthogonal experimentation, the optimal conditions were found. Rosin modified phenol-aldehyde epoxy resin (for short RPAE) was synthesized under the optimal conditions. The influence of the kind of catalysts and their dosage, the ratio of raw materials on synthesis of rosin modified nonyl phenol-aldehyde epoxy resin (for short RNPAE) were studied. The structures of RPAE and RNPAE were characterized by FT-IR, NMR and HPLC. The curing kinetics was studied by DSC. TG spectrum showed that the epoxy resin had good heat resistance.
