Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a kind of fine polymer obtained by free radical polymerization of N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP). It has many good properties, such as chemical stability, film forming property, physiological inertia and adhesion capacity. It is used in many industries including medicine. chemistry and food etc. The contents of the artic were followed.The synthesis methods and applications of NVP and PVP were reviewed. PVP, the copolymer of NVP and Vinyl Acetate (VAc) and the copolymer of NVP and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) were prepared by the new methods in solution.. Firstly, the influences of solvents, monomer concentration, and initiator concentration on PVP were investigated; Secondly, the effects of the reaction conditions on the co-polymerization were studied, the relationship between the conversion and copolymer composition was also studied, the control method of composition distribution was explored; Lastly, the flocculating capability of the copolymer of NVP/VAc was investigated, from the flocculation experiment of the kaolin suspension, the quantity of the flocculent and the best value of pH of the system were studied.Various methods were used to measure and analysis the polymer. Using two kinds of initiators, the two kinds of PVP were synthesized, one is: the value of K is from 20 to 50, the conversion rate can reach 98%; the other is: the value of K is from 50 to 90, the conversion rate can reach 99%. The copolymer of NVP and VAc was synthesized under appropriate conditions, the composition and the equality of the composition were studied, the value of K is from 40 to 70. The flocculent performance of the copolymer of NVP/DMC was studied, the results showed that the copolymer can improve the sedimentation velocity and permeation capability of the kaolin suspension distinctly.
