Bamboo is a kind of rapid growing renewable source and an appropriate substitute of woods. The pyrolysis process of bamboo is essential to understand the carbonization of bamboo and to utilize bamboo effectively. The present work is consisted of two parts. One is the pyrolysis kinetics study of bamboo based on thermogravimetry. Outer, middle and inner parts of bamboo were pyrolyzed in TG equipment (TGA/SDTA851e) at heating rates of 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40℃/min under the temperature range of 40 ~ 500 Cand N2 atmosphere. The other is about investigation on char yield of bamboo pyrolysis in pyrolysis furnace under various operation conditions.TG results demonstrated that the pyrolysis process of bamboo might be considered as a two-step reaction, one corresponds to the decomposition of hemicellulose and the other is the decomposition of cellulose and lignin. Supposing the reaction order of bamboo pyrolysis to be 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 respectively, the experimental data was treated based on pyrolysis kinetic model. The appropriate reaction order of 1.5 or 2 was obtained by minimizing the difference between the calculated and measured data and the order of pyrolysis reaction for different bamboo parts are the same when the heating rate of 5 to 40℃/min. The results show that the heating rate of pyrolysis process influences the order of pyrolysis reaction, activation energy and frequency factor. Results of pyrolysis experiments in furnace show that the char yield of bamboo pyrolysis decreased with the increasing of heating rate and pyrolysis temperature. The property of the bamboo char (the solid product of bamboo after pyrolysis) was characterized.
