Potassium ferrate, a new non-pollution green oxidant, has high selectivity and activity. It can oxidize organic compounds such as alcohol, nitride and hydrocarbon. Oxidation activity could be adjusted by adjusting reaction conditions(temperature, pH value etc), solvent, adding phase transfer catalyst or solid catalyst. Benzaldehyde was synthesized by green Fe(IV) oxidant from benzyl alcohol and the optimum reaction conditions, in water phase, organic solvent with phase tranfer catalyst, acetic acid-sodium acetate medium, organic solvent with solid catalyst, were determined. The consequence shows as follows. (1) The optimum reaction conditions in water phase are: sodium hydroxide aqueous solution (pH=11. 5) as solvent, reaction temperature 18 , reaction time 4 minutes, amount of oxidant is the amount of theoretical reaction requirement (m=0. 396g). At the optimum condition, the conversion of the benzyl alcohol, the selectivity and yield of the benzaldehyde are 62. 0%, 82. 3% and 51.0%, respectively. (2) The optimum reaction condition in tne conditions of organic solvent and phase transfer catalyst are: benzyltrimethyl- ammonium chloride as phase transfer catalyst, cyclohexane and sodium hydroxide aqueous solution (pH=11. 5) as solvent, reaction temperature 18 , reaction time 7 minutes, amount of oxidant is the amount of theoretical reaction requirement (m=0. 396g). At this condition, the conversion of the benzyl alcohol, the selectivity and yield of the benzaldehyde are 91. 7%, 97. 2% and 89. 1%, respectively. (3) In acetic acid-sodium acetate medium, the optimum reaction conditions are: 10mL acetic acid (concentration, 36%) mixed with 2. 5g sodium hydroxide, and then add 0. 396g potassium ferrate, stirred the mixture for 10 minutes. Add benzyl alcohol the resulting mixture and control reaction temperature of 18 , reaction time 3. 5 minutes. At this condition, the conversion of the benzyl alcohol, the selectivity and yield of the benzaldehyde are 94. 8%, 90. 8% and 86. 0%, respectively. (4) In the conditions of organic solvent and solid catalyst, the optimum reaction conditions are: ultrastable zeolite as solid catalyst, cyclohexane as solvent and adding small amount of cetic acid (concentration, 36%) , reaction temperature 18 , reaction time 10 hours, amount of oxidant 1. 98g. At this condition, the conversion of the benzyl alcohol, the selectivity and yield of the benzaldehyde are 82. 6%, 94. 8% and 78. 3%, respectively. The experiment result show: Potassium ferrate, compared with traditional oxidants, has such advantages in oxidizing organic compounds: high selectivity, short reaction time, mildness reaction conditions, non-pollution. So green oxidant potassium ferrate has bright developing prospect in organic synthesis.
