In this thesis, the development of float process, typical defects and quality difference between China and other countries of float glass have been summarized. The mechanisms of SO2 effects on the roll and float glass have been discussed, SO2 is introduced near the life up rolls. The samples were obtained on the spot directly. The structures, surface morphologies, compositions, surface rigidities and the boning states of obtained samples are characterized by XRD, SEM , XRF, AFM, FTIR and XPS. The friction factor is measured by friction experimental equipment. The experimental results show that SO2 has no effect on the tin having entered the underside surface of float glass. Abnormal Sn distribution hasn't been found in the vertical direction of the underside surface of float glass. In addition, SO2 reacts with alkali metals enriched in the underside surface to product sulphate, which prevents float glass from going moldy.S content of the roll surface in S02 environment increases as the treating time prolongs, the relationship between them obeys non-linear exponential increase. When the roll has been treated for more than 4 h, the increasing speed slows down. At the same time, the microscopic rigidity and friction factor decrease and both of them obey the non-linear exponential decrease. However, they decrease dramatically during the first 4 h and then decrease slowly. SEM and AFM observe the loose granular structure of the roll surface. The FTIR and XPS results indicate that layered FeS is formed in the roll surface in SO2 environment.
