The formation mechanism of titanium nitride powders by reduction of carbon and nitridation was researched by method of continuous weighing. The possibility to obtain the titanium nitride from this process was asserted by thermodynamical analysis and by the means of X-ray diffraction and SEM.The sample used for the kinetics research was cylinder in size of 37.2 26mm molded at a pressure of 6MPa with a composition of 1:3.0 of titania to active carbon. The relations of the reaction velocity with the reaction time undergone at 1250 C, 1350 C and 1400 C respectively were determined by the continuous weighing with the electrical balance. An apparent activation energy of 182.35KJ/mol was obtained for the range of 1250 C to 1350 C, and that of 82.32KJ /mol for the range of 1350 C to 1400 C. At the same time, the relation between reaction velocity and reaction time is linear in the range of 1250 C to 1350 C, but it is a parabola curve in the range of 1350 C to 1400 C. So it can be concluded that the process undergone in the range of 1250 C to 1350 C is controlled by chemical reaction while that in the range of 1350 C to 1400 C by diffusion. The experiment results show that the reduction by carbon and nitridation is connected with the reaction temperature, molding pressure and ratio of TiO2/C of the sample. The ratio of nitridation increases as the temperature does and reaches the uppermost at 1:2.5 for the ratio of titania to carbon.
