The ABR (Anaerobic Baffled Reactor) comprises a series of vertical baffles to force the wastewater to flow under and over them, and ABR may be classified as a series of compartment. It is simple in design and improved biomass retention within reactor. This reactor system has been reported to have many advantages over other reactor system, therefore ABR is one of the many types of high-rate anaerobic reactor presently attracting growing interests. For few study about industry wastewater , we still have much work to do, such as start-up, performance , sludge maintaining , so as to know more about the process character.This paper is about start-up, operating performance, sludge character of ABR,in which the wastewater come form the steep of com for starch producing .Result of study indicated:1 .The reactor was inoculated with aerobic seed and start-up lasted for 88 days, The start-up periodsthrough three stages:cultivation stage ,improving loading stage and stable stage.During the fiststage(HRT=24h,OLR=1.0 kgCOD/m3.d), the increasing rate of the COD removal varied form lowrate to high rate.In improving loading stage,the COD removal rate maintain 80%. In stablestage(OLR=5.0 kgCOD/m3.d), the COD removal rate maintain 75%.It is which supplied by proteinand SO42-, SO32- in inflow that maintain reactor stability, although the VFA concentration remain high.2.The volumetric loading rate and hydraulic retention time have some influence on the COD removalrate. In the same loading, the COD removal rate is increased with the length of HRT. Compared withhigh loading, the trend is not obvious, on the other hand, increased with the increasing of loading, whenHRT is 48h, 38h respectively. However ,when is 28h,20h,10h,the rate of COD removal decrease withloading increasing. The study of relative removal rate of each compartment indicate that removal ratewas achieved mainly in the first compartment in the condition of low loading in HRT=48h andHRT=10h.In other conditions, each compartment has equivalent performance. The study of the removalrate of each compartment indicate : under low loading, the removal rate decreased along the flow, Underhigh loading ,the result is converse. When HRT is 20h,10h respectively, the COD removal rate insecond compartment is lower than the first, and the removal rate of sequencing compartment increasedgradually.3.Character of biogas yield indicate that the overall gas production of the system decrease with short ofHRT .In the same HRT, the gas production increase with loading increasing. The rate of gas productionindicate that :the rate of gas production is low in ABR,between0.27~0.5L/gCOD.in the fist threecompartments, the rate increase with loading increasing, but the degree of decreasing weakens in turn,whereas ,the rate of the last two compartments has no obvious change.4.In the study ,Ph of effluent was maintain in 6.8~7.5,the rat of TA/VFA IS 1.8~5.6,and the reactorkeeps stable water quality. Sludge transition is the main reason of high VFA in effluent.5. ABR has strong resistance ability to temporary temperature shock .However ,under high load, andlong lower temperature, the removal rate of cod decreased. ABR also has strong resistance ability toloading shock. In HRT=20h,the performance of reactor stable quickly just through double ofHRT, when the loading improved form 2.57KgCOD/ (m3'd) to10.5KgCOD/ (m3 d).6.there is phase in ABR. Moreover ,the phenomenon is more obvious when the rector is more stable.7.The activity of methane production is the biggest in the first compartment ,the second is the lest. Andthe activity of the last three compartment is bigger than the second ,but the activity decrease gradually inturn. In The first compartment ,the settlement becomes worse with the length of time of operatingbecause of acidification. The return sludge form the fifth compartment to the first one has no obviouseffect on each fanction of ABR.
