The polymer of maleic anhydride grafted polyolefine can be used as adhesive of polyolefine resins. Maleic anhydride grafted chloridized polyolefine can be used as an adhesion promoter. Therefore, maleic anhydride grafted polymer has attached much importance. However, in graft reaction, the graft efficiency were generally lower, a great deal of maleic anhydride were not grafted to main chains of the polymer. The ungrafted maleic anhydride existed in the form of polymaleic anhydride in the reaction system .If the graft product were not separated, the reaction product obtained will be a mixture contained graft polymer and polymaleic anhydride. From an application view, if the ungrafted maleic were removaled , the adhesion of the grafted polymer will be improved. From an basic research view, if we estimated the properties of the unseparated mixture in the light of the properties of the purified grafted polymer, there would be a great deal of difference. Therefore, the properties of the polymaleic anhydride should be investigated individually, thus we could selected optimum separated method or estimated the properties of the unseparated mixture by the experiment results.Above all, according to the former work of our laboratory, polymaleic anhydride (by-product of chlorinated polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride) was synthesized by simulating the reaction condition of chlorinated polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride. Molecular weight was obtained by GPC , hydrolyzed ratio was determined by neutralization titration and infrared spectrometry.The solubility parameter of polymaleic anhydride (PMAN) was determined by the Intrinsic viscosity method, the solubility parameter was about 22. 75 (J/cm3)1/2 .The solubility of PMAN at room temperature was determined by the weighing method. The studies of the dissolving properties of PMAN in various solvents show that PMAN is a strongly hydrogen bonded polymer, and is soluble in the medium or strongly hydrogen bonded solvents and insoluble in poorly hydrogen bonded solvents. Using the method of Liberman , the solubility parameter of PMAN is 24 (J/cm3) l/2bydrawing the contour line .The number is 23.3(J/cm3)1/2by the method of Baley' drawing round, or 24(J/cm3)1/2 by the method of drawing ellipse using the association interaction parameter of solvents. The number is 23. 3(J/cm3)1/2 by the method of Hansen'three-dimensional solubility parameter, the division of the number were: d =14.0(J/cm3)1/2; p =9.8(J/cm3)1/2; h =15.8(J/cm3)1/2. The results ofdifferent methods are very near, and the most error is 2.42%. The experiment results are also disposed and discussed using Wiehe'polygon method and Liu Guojie'new definition of solubility parameter method. These results offer basic data for more research on the PMAN appliance capabilities.Miscibility of PMAN with varied resins were investigated by means of several methods. The studies of the miscibility by means of co-solvent method and the glossiness of the film method showed that PMAN and amido resin,crylic acid resin, altered alkyd resin were compatible. The result was consistent with the result of solubility parameter method. But epoxide resin was an exception, which was related with their small molecular weight.On the basis of the former results, Miscibility of unseparated reaction solution with varied resins were investigated by means of co-solvent method and the glossiness of the film method. The miscibility of 344# acrylic resin with the mixture was better than others, when the ratio of the mixture to 344# acrylic resin was one to ten, the miscibility attained best, and the glossiness of the film was 100 percent.The effect of miscibility and molecular weight on delaminating rate were investigated by the co-solvent method. The result showed that the miscibility of the resins played an main role in determining the delamination rate.
