High Speed Machining is an advanced practical manufacturing technology. It is becoming the main stream of machining and has powerful vitality and wide prospects for application. The concept of High Speed Machining greatly aroused people's interests and became the hotspot of machining research when it was put forward since 1930's. With the development of the technology of machine tools and cutting tools with high speed, this concept was not applied in industry until later 1980's.The technology of High Speed Machining, which characterizes by high cutting speed, high feeding speed, high processing precision and fine qualities of machining surface, is different from the machining mechanism of the traditional technology of machining. And now it is widely used by many domestic and international industries, such as aviation, automobile and mould manufacture. Brief introduction on key techniques, theoretical foundation and development status of high speed machining at home and abroad is given in this paper. Based on the system study of cutting forces, cutting temperature, surface roughness, chip formation, tool wearing of NAK80 which is usually used in mould processing ,cutting rules of high speed milling NAK80 are analyzed . The result shows that NAK80 is suitable to high speed machining and it will become a leading material which is widely used in the rubber and plastic mouid. The prospects of high speed machining for application in mould manufacture are forecasted in this paper.
