Fordia cauliflora Hemsl.,also named as Renru is a a large evergreen tree,belonging to Leguminosae genus, Milletlia family. It is become a peculiar plant ofChina. It mainly distributes in the south of China, such as Guangdong, GuangxiProvinces and so on. In the south of China, Renru has been used as invigorant formany years. It is thought to be good for brain and kidney and it used to treat weakness,mental retardation and Alzheimer' disease. Proceed from the purpose to find out fully both the chemical constituents andbiological activities of the plant, we studied systematically both the chemicalconstituents of Fordia cauliflora Hemsl.and activities. Thus,these studies willprovide certain scientific basis for the further systematic study of the medical value ofthis plant. The effects on the memory facilitation in mice were investigated using the stepdown test and Morris water maze. The results showed that certain concentration(75%)of RENRU could combat the impairment of acquisition of memory produced byscopolamine,and reduce the deficit of retrieval of memory induced by alcohol andalso reduce the disruption of consolidation of memory caused by NaNO2,especiallythe middle dosage. But the decoction by water has not the memory facilitation inmice. On the basis of systematical consulting the researching literatures of chemicalconstituents and biological activities study of Milletlia family plants, systematicpretreated study was conducted. Many constituents have been found,including organicacid, alkaloid, hydrobenzene ingredient, saccharid, coumarin , lipin and so on. Bymeans of both physics and chemistry and spectrum analysis, 8 compounds wereisolated from the ethanol extract of Renru and 6 compounds among them weredetermined. They are: 5-methoxy-2-phenyl-4H-furo[2,3H] -1-benzopyran -4-one,Ⅰ),β -sitosterol(II), vanillic acid(III), palmitic acid(IV), 3-methoxy-2- phenyl-4H-furo[2,3-H]-1-benzopyran- 4- one(V), 4H,8H-Benzo [1,2-b: 3,4-b']-di pyran-4-one,8,8-dimethoxyl-3- phenyl(VI).
