In this paper, a method for the prediction of retention times of compounds analyzed during programmed-temperature gas chromatography with capillary columns is described.First, we should employ an explicit mathematics model for the precise calculation of the retention times. In this progress, we compare several models provided by the references and ourselves and finally employ the equation lnk'= aT3+bT2+cT+d as the basic model. At the present time, capacity factor k' is considered as a constant and can't be used to predict the retention times. However, when we investigated the plate theory, we found that capacity factor k' is variational, so the theory can predict the retention times. In this study, we correct the hypothesis of plate theory and establish a new method for the prediction of retention times of different compounds analyzed during programmed-temperature gas chromatography with capillary columns. The data show that the precisions are considerable. Prediction of retention times by using plate theory is not only helpful to the practical analytical work, but it is also significant to the development of plate theory.
