Fire researchers all over the world have concerned the research field for fire characteristics and rules of furniture (especially soft furniture) for a long time. I was honored to have taken part in the overall research first developed in this field in our country. This paper is completed on the base of summarizing the task.Fire characteristics mainly express in both aspects of ignition and burning. Referring to relevant research fruit, experience and the situation in our country, test devices and corresponding system and method have been set up for testing ignition characteristic and burning characteristic. The paper thoroughly analyzes the developing situation and direction in this field internal and abroad. It analyzes and discusses the test devices, system and method. Also the paper introduces the developing and specialty of modern data collection system and general bus technology, as well as it theoretically introduces and derivates in detailed about the principle of oxygen consuming. The paper sets forth the scientific demarcation method and conclusion.Basing on the test devices and method, a series of ignition characteristic tests and burning characteristic tests have been carried out, and a set of valuable test data have been taken out. The paper researches the furniture (especially soft furniture) characteristics, such as ignition, heat release rate, flame spread speed, smoke density and toxic gas concentration resulted from burning. Thus it discovers the valuable general rules in furniture fire characteristics, and brings both methods for estimating soft furniture heat release rate peak value and for measuring flame spread speed, which is more practical comparing with such kind of method abroad. At last, the paper suggests classifying the soft furniture fire risk.
