Direct and catalytic liquefaction of four kinds of wood in water wascarried out in an autoclave in the reaction temperature range of280-360oC. Three reaction times (10min, 20min, 30min) and threefeedstock ratios of biomass/water (8g/100ml, 10g/100ml, 12.5g/100ml)were tested in the direct liquefaction of cunninghamia lanceolata, and0.8g K2CO3 was adopted in the catalytic liquefaction. The experimentalresults show that the yield of heavy oil has a maximum between 300oCand 340oC, depending on the reaction time and the feedstock ratioadopted and the chemical composition of the feedstock. Discussion was made on the effect of reaction conditions, includingreaction temperature, reaction time and feedstock ratio of biomass/water,on liquefaction of wood. The effect of material and catalyst on the yieldof liquefaction products was also studied, and the relationship betweenthe lignin content of the biomass and the residue yield was obtained. Thecorrelation coefficient is r=0.9418, indicating a strong correlationbetween the lignin content and the residue yield.
