PMMA/SiO2 hybrid nano-materials were prepared with TEOS, MMA and active monomer hydroxypropyl methy methacrylate (HPMA) by sol-gel method and The hybrid materials were also used to modify PP and HDPE as fillings. The effects of water dosage and pH on the size and stability of sol were qualitatively analyzed by spectral transmittance in order to optimize technical parameters. The covalent bonds between organic and inorganic phase in hybrids were confirmed by extraction experiment and FTIR. Wide angel and small angle X-ray diffraction spectra results showed that hybrids were amorphous and the inorganic content has little effect on particle size of hybrids. The filling effects of the quasi-gel were better than powder at the same SiO2 content. When the content of SiO2 in the composites was 2%(wt%), the maximum toughness strength reached 9.96kJ/m2, which increased 81% than pure PP. When the content of SiO2 in the composites was1%(wt%), the maximum tensile strength reached 49.1MPa, which increased 24% than pure PP.The hybrids material in composites could absorb striking energy, restrict fine crackle, induce crystal generation and minish spherulite size, so the mechanical properties of composites was improved.
