In this research, bio-ceramic filter was studied for pretreatment of micro-polluted source water from Yellow River. Furthermore, several process parameters significantly affecting the performance of bio-pretreatment and its effects on the subsequent conventional treatment process were tested. The results of this research were listed as follows:(1) when gas/water ratio is 0.25:1 and the hydraulic load is 5.1m3/m2h,bio-ceramic filter can effectively remove micro-pollutants such as CODmn, NH4+-N , NO2~N and algae, The average removal efficiency is 14.4% 73.5 % 8 3.8% 33.8% respectly and it well adapted to different water qualities due to seasonal change.( 2 ) The micro-pollutants removal efficiency was improved by increasing operational temperature, while there is no significant effect on removal efficiency under low temperature: the biomass activity was still high even below 5 °C. The research results showed that when hydraulic load reduced to 3m3/m2h,bio-ciramic fiter had no effect on removal efficiency of CODM NH4+-N > NC>2~N, but it enhanced the algae removal efficiency.(3) The bio-ceramic filter pretreatment significantly enhanced the removal efficiency of micro-pollutants in its subsequent treatment process. The coagulation and disinfection chemical consumption in subsequent treatment reduced by 21.5% > 18% respectly. Therefore, apart from improving subsequent treatment efficiency, the bio-ceramic pretreatment has economical benefit as well. The major operation parameters on pilot scale were optimized to provide valuable experimental data for the design and operation of drinking water treatment plant, where the raw water comes from Yellow River or other micro-polluted water resources.
