It is comprehensive that catalytic hydrogenation reaction is applied in chemistry industry. Those are two important reactions the saturation of C=C bond with hydrogen and the reduction of carbonyl in fatty acid and fatty acid ester. In many situations, it is often that substitutes catalytic hydrogenation for chemical reduction. The advantage of catalytic hydrogenation over chemical reduction is that the product has higher purity quotient and is separated more easily. Moreover, catalytic hydrogenation can be used to the reduction of a variety of organic compounds, such as nitro, carbonyl, amino, aromatic and heteroaromatic compound, hydroxy group and carboxy group. The paper lays stress on the selective and absolute hydrogenation of acetophenone and hydrogenation of nitro aromatic compounds, phenol, benzonitrile, benzene, chlorobenzene, methyl benzoate and 4-nitropyridine- N-oxide with Raney Ru under mild conditions. The supported metal catalysts consisting of Ni, Pt, Ru, Pd and Rh have been studied for the hydrogenation of acetophenone and its derivatives. However , the selectivity to a desired product is not satisfactory since many side products are formed during the course of hydrogenation of acetophenone.. The effect of reaction parameters, such as solvent, temperature, hydrogen pressure, reduction time on the hydrogenation of acetophenone have been investigated. The catalyst exhibites very high activity and selectivity in hydrogenation of acetophenone. And the selectivity of a-phenylethanol can reach 91% at 50℃ under a hydrogen pressure of 4 atm. For the absolute hydrogenation of acetophenone, both conversion of actophenone and purity of product can reach 100% at 90℃ under a hydrogen pressure of 4 atm. Moreover, the catalyst can be used many times without any disposal of it.And the paper researches the hydrogenation activity of nitro aromatic compounds, phenol, benzonitrile, benzene, chlorobenzene, methyl benzoate and 4-nitropyridine- N-oxide with Raney Ru under mild conditions.
