Anaerobic wastewater treatment is a sort of low cost technology which integrates the disposal of wasterwater with energy recycle. The technology fits the present situation of our country well. Anerobic wastewater treatment technology will be with great prospects in the water pollution control area. One of the anaerobic treatment processes used in the world is the upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor. The reactor has succeeded in treating wastewater with various ingredient and strength. Granulation of inoculation sludge is the goal of UASB reader's startup process and symbol of successful startup.Phenol has been placed in blacklist as poisonal pollution in China and America. So researching deeply how to eliminate the phenol and its ramification in wastewater is a practical significance.Four laboratory upflow anaerobic sludge bed(UASB) reactors are used to complet -e the parallel and comparative experiment in the middle temperature .The concentrate -d mud from sewage-disposing factories is treated as inoculation by Rl,R2,and R3, wh -ereas the mud from septic tank is treated as inoculation by R4. AICI3 of 300mg/l is ad -ded into the inffluent water of Rl and CaCl2 of 150mg/l is added into the inffluent w-ater of R3 to study the difference between the two inoculations(mud from septic tank a -nd mud from sewage disposing) during the start-up of the UASB, and it was also used to examine the effects of Al and Ca on the sludge granulation processduring star-up of the UASB. Result showing that mud from septic tank is better than mud from sewag -e disposing as inoculation, microorganism can be detained better by adding Al3+ and Ca2+ in the inffluent water.UASB reactor was used to degrade wasterwater containing concentrated phenol in the middle temperature. The granulation sludge was cultivated and tamed by enhancing the constration of phenol in the inffluent water step by step without effluent recycle. Th -e purpose to do it in this way is to study the degrad -ation of phenol in UASB and the top limited concentration of phenol in inffluent ,and test the resume the method fast wh -en the UASB reactor was impacted or the activation of granulation sludge was restrain -ed. Using glucose as phenol intergrowth has positive function in the taming sludge of experiments and is a good method for the activation of restrained microorganism. In th -e experiment course , when the HRT is 20h, the inffluent phenol concentration is 3571mg/l(COD=8500mg/l), the corresponding volume load is 10.2(g-COD/l/d), theactivation of microorganism of sludge is totally suppressed.Results showed that benzoate was the key intermediate of phenol degration. Conversion of benzoate to methane was suppressed by the presence of phenol.
