Research on preparing one kind of rare earth chelate with high efficient luminescence has been of interest in recent years. And the luminescent property of the composite doped with rare earth chelate has aroused a wide range of attention for a variety of technological applications such as optical devices. Especially the composite whose luminescent color changes with temperatures is promising for being used as temperature detector and thermal-sensitive probe of optical fiber sensor. This paper designed a series of rare earth chelates Eu-Tb-HFA-TPPO, Eu-Tb-TFA-TPPO, Eu-Gd-HFA-TPPO and Eu-Gd-TFA-TPPO. Preparation, optical spectroscopy and energy transfer mechanism between rare earth ions in these chelates and the gel glasses doped with the chelates have been studied and lots of intriguring results have been obtained. All the chelates possess high efficient luminescence and triboluminescence properties. Terbium ions and Gadolinium ions intensify Europium ions in these chelates. Dexter mechanism is concluded to be responsible for the energy transfer between terbium ions and europium ions. Further more, for the gel glass doped with Eu-Tb-HFA-TPPO, luminescent color changes with temperatures, while gel glass doped with Eu-Tb-TFA-TPPO does not possess this property. It is concluded that Forster mechanism is responsible for the energy transfer between rare earth ions in the gel glass doped with Eu-Tb-HFA-TPPO and Dexter mechanism is responsible for the energy transfer between rare earth ions in the gel glass doped with Eu-Tb-TFA-TPPO. In the gel glass doped with Eu-Gd-TFA-TPPO Gadolinium ions sensitize europium ions, while this does not happen with the gel glass doped with Eu-Gd-HFA-TPPO. The further study suggests that the rare earth ions has been binuclear synthesized in the gel glass doped with Eu-Tb-TFA-TPPO and Eu-Gd-TFA-TPPO.
