In the paper we utilized methyl mthacrylate (MMA)-methacrylic acid(MA)-β-hydroxyethylmethacrylate(HEMA) copolymer to prepare a seed latex, which was shelled consequently by the PMMA-MA copolymer and PMMA-styrene(St)-divinylbenzene(DVB) copolymer. The core/shell composite latex particles thus prepared was subjected to alkaline(NaOH) treatment to obtain the hollow latex particle, Based on the hollow particle, muli-layer core-shell hollow latex was also prepared by the seed emulsion method.The following conclusions was found out:a. when the emulfiers system was sodium lauryl sulfate(SDS) and AEO-9 composite(the ratio of SDS to AEO-9)is 1:1, the ratio of composite to monomer is 3‰-5‰(relative to monomer)), the stability of the resulted latex was the best;b. the optimal condition of alkaline treatment: PH: 12.5, temperature: 95℃, time: 3h;c. when the amount of the linking agent(DVB) is 6‰-8‰(relative to monomer) in polystyrene shell layer, the weight ratio of the core to shell is 1:8, the hollow diameter of the resulted latex particle is the largest;d. when the monomer to form the film was added by semi-continous" feed-starving" method(dropping-speed is no more than 30ml/h, dropping-time is over 2h), the hollow diameter of the resulted latex is the largest.The structure, morphologies and the performance of the latex were characterized byTEM, SEM, DSC, IR & CPS.The resulted latex was used to prepare exterior coating, and the performances of the liniment were tested by liniment scrub-resistance testing instrument and lacquer adhesion strength testing instrument and thermal conductivity testing instrument. The testing results showed that the performances of the exterior-coating prepared from the multi-layer hollow latex didn't show any difference from the one from ordinary styrene-acrylates latex, But its thermal conductivity was sixty percents lower than the ordinary one.
