In this paper, the failure of pin punch was analyzed and optimized based on FEA and PVD, according to failure mechanism of fracture and wear of pin punch.Some key techniques in solving the problem of pin punchs fracture were as follows: First, author analyzed a fine round punch set based on DEFORM, and then its set was optimized by using the analytic conclusion based on ANSYS, and thus its optimization set which was correct through testing in shop solution was acquired. Second, analyzing and optimizing the fine abnormal punch the author found its optimization set by theory in combination with practice. Finally, the pin punch relative set was optimized. In a word, the author fully considered the intrinsic and external factor of the pin punchs fracture in the subject and basically solved its fracture defect.Some key techniques in solving the problems of pin punchs wear were as follows: On the one hand, the author expounded wear theory and PVD ,and arrived at the conclusion that the major wear mechanism of pin punch was adhesive wear, and thus solved the wear problem by using duplex treatment of PVD to deposit TiN or TiCN on the nitriding layer of pin punchs. On the other hand, in the lab author studied tribology of nitriding layer, TiN coatings and their complex on AISI D2 steel and arrived at the conclusion that the wear resistance of complex layer was the best. Finally, the above process was applied to pin punchs surface treatment and the result of testing the fine punchs in the shop solution showed that the conclusion in the lab basically matched that in the shop solution. In short, in the subject the author deposited TiN on the nitriding layer of pin punch and obtained the pin punch whose internal toughness was good enough and whose external hardness was high enough, which efficiently solved not only fine punchs wear problem but also its fracture defect.
