This paper discussed the impact of heavy metals pollution on soil and agro-products' quality on both sides of roads in JiangSu province. Soil samples and agro-products (wheat seeds and rice) were collected from 16 sections of roads, and analysed for the contents of Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni and Cr to estimate the pollution. We also studied the distributions of heavy metals in soil and agro-products in different distances on sides of roads. Based on the results, we analysed the pollution sources. Following conclusions were achieved:1. Contents of Pb in wheat seeds on sides of National road 205 , 104 and province roads are higher than that of Shanghai-Nanjing expressway, contents of Cu, Zn,Cd are lower on the contrary. Contents of heavy metals in rice are lower than that in wheat seeds. The contents divergence of heavy metals in rice on sides of Shanghai-Nanjing expressway and National road 104 is not obvious. Compared with the background values, the concentration of Pb, Zn, Cd in wheat seeds in 250m increase, and the pollution of Pb, Cd is heavy serious, contents of Cu, Zn, Cd in rice increase too, but content of Pb is close to background value. According to the national standards, the lead content in rice exceeds standard seriously, while the contents of other heavy metals are lower than the standards.2. Contents of Pb, Cu, Cd in soil of Shanghai-Nanjing expressway are higher than that of other roads. Contents of Pb, Cu, Cd in soil of Dongqiao section of Shanghai-Nanjing expressway are higher than which of other sections. Contents of Pb, Cu, Ni in Gaogou section are higher than that of other sections of National road 205. Compared with background values, contents of Pb, Cu, Cd in soil increase, which suggests soil on the both sides of road has been polluted by these elements. Pollution of Pb, Cu, Cd in soil of Dongqiao section of Shanghai-Nanjing expressway is more serious than others.3. The maximum content of Pb in soil on both sides of Shanghai-Nanjing expressway locates in 100m or 150m. While, in wheat seeds the maximum content of Pb appears in 50m. The Lead pollution character in agricultural products is more obvious than that in soil.4. Analysed the concentrations of heavy metals in totalsuspend particle (TSP/PMio) in atmosphere of both sides of the highway, the result shows that the contents of Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd in TSP and PM10 are much higher than that in soil. The soil and agricultural plants on both sides of roads are also polluted by the traffic pollution.
