Expandable graphite is a very important kind of functional carbon material ,which can be applied in seal field, environment protection, flame retardant technology, medical treatment and catalyzing organic reaction, and it can be synthesized by method of electrochemistry and chemistry oxidation. The latter method has been started to be applied since 1990, due to the instability of the product of the former method .The sulfur content of the expandable graphite is 4.5%, while synthesized by the traditional way of chemistry oxidation method. Because in industry expandable graphite is mostly used as seal material and extensively applied in high-tech domains, such as nuclear power plant, avigation and petroleum industry, then often erodes the metal material which connected with it and loses seal, so the sulfur content of the expandable graphite is an important target to achieve, at the same time, the industry manufacture need the greater volume. There are few reports on expandable graphite in catalyzing organic reaction, we found that the catalysis capability was perfect through many primary experiments. And our work is to synthesize the expandable graphite, which has greater volume and lower sulfur content, with organic regent substituting for oil of vitriol and with some oxidants using to meet the need of the industry manufacture, to study the catalysis capability of the product.The main research works are as follows:1. The expandable graphite was prepared using acetic anhydride as inserting agent and potassium dichromate as oxidants. the optimum condition was discussed , the targets of product were measured, too.2. The product were characterized and the synthesis mechanism were discussed.3. 2-ethyl-2-hexenal and benzal acetophenone were synthesized using the expandable graphite as catalyzes, their structures were characterized by IR, 1HNMR, and the catalysis mechanism were discussed.
