Glass-ceramics is a new research progress in ceramics field. As a kind of new functional materials and structural materials, its optical, electrical, biochemical and magnetic natures are widely used in the fields of microelectronic technique, biomedicine, high-technology of national defense and mechanical manufactory. As a kind of building materials, it has the merits of glass, ceramics and stone. Glass-ceramics has a great variety and the features of low expansion coefficient, high strength and low dielectric dissipation fraction. It is a corrosion resistant, heat shock resistant material too. So, glass-ceramics has shown an extensive foreground as soon as it was created.Cordierite based glass-ceramics is one of glass-ceramics. It is considered as a prospective material because of its low dielectric dissipation fraction, cost and expansion coefficient, high strength, abundant primary material and effective insulation. It is widely used to manufacture circuit board, isolator, condenser, wave filter and frequency mixer in power and electron industry. Research and development of cordierite based glass-ceramics has always been warm-up for its special merits and extensive foreground. The text reviewed the development, preparation technology and application of glass-ceramics. Thermal and mechanical performance, relationship between the amount and variety of nucleation agents were studied. Crystallization nature and crystallization behavior were discussed using DTA, XRD and SEM. In this paper, mechanics of crystallization was analyzed. Now, there are three methods of producing glass-ceramics. They are sintering method, Sol-Gel method and fusion method. All of them have both shortcomings and merits. Considering all the factors, fusion method was used to synthesize high-purity cordierite based glass-ceramics with TiO2 and ZrO2 as nucleation agents, the composition and craft of cordierite based glass-ceramics were generated in the paper. The best heat treating regime was obtained through experiments in order to reduce the cost and raise the nature of the material. Favorable data and creative results were got during the test, which are hopeful to supplyreferences to the glass-ceramics industry.
