A bacterial strain, ZY3, growing with sex steroid hormones as sole source of carbon and energy, was isolated from a sewage treatment plant in a prophylactic production factory and could degrade 3-methoxy-17βhydroxy-1,3,5(10), 8(9)-△4-estren, named MHE, through being enriched and domesticated. This strain was preliminarily identified as Raoultella sp. ZY3 according to its morphological and physiological properties and the analysis of its 16S rDNA sequence, the optimum temperature, pH, time and concentration for the degradation of MHE by strain ZY3 were 35℃, 10.0, 72h and 10mg/L, respectively. The degradation rate of sex steroid hormones was promoted to 87% and 85% after the addition of maltose and peptone. The sex steroid hormones degradation will be impressed when there is other carbon supply easily to be used, and strain ZY3 can use organic nitrogen better than inorbanic nitrogen supply. Heavy metal ions Sn2+,Zn2+ ,Al3+,Mn2+ ,Cd2+ ,Cu2+especially Sn2+,Zn2+,Cd2+ ,Cu2+ can greatly restrain the growth and sex steroid hormones degradation by ZY3. By this time, Raoultella sp. ZY3 was the first bacterial strain took MHE as sole carbon and energy resources in China. It was explained for the characteristics of strain ZY3 degradating MHE in theory. In a word, this study was expected to be bestead for treating with the pollution of sex steroid hormones of China.
