Based on cognitive psychology process, CBR (Case-Based Reasoning) is a new method of machine self-learning and solving problem. CBR assumes that many human activities are governed by applying knowledge from previously encountered situations rather than from abstract rules. So it, by the way of association and comparison, applies previous experience, methods and procedures in solving problems to solving present situations. Because of its peculiar knowledge expression method, learning mode, reasoning mechanism and solving strategy, CBR has been followed with great interest ,and applied in many fields served for an alternative approach to rule-based reasoning to solve some complex problems.While Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) has gained applications in many fields, little research can be found on Case -Based Reasoning in the field of CAID (Computer Aided Industrial Design). Researches of Case-Based Reasoning are relevant with psychology, artificial intelligence, computer programming. But one of the most important problems is how to adopt CBR in the field of industrial design.This thesis is a sub-project of the Tenth National Five-year Science and Technology Project. The relations between CBR and general process of NC Machine Tools design were studied to provide foundational theory for Computer Aided Industrial Design in terms of CBR. Furthermore, based on case-based system analysis and task-analysis experiment, the framework of ICAID (Internet based Computer Aided Industrial Design) system was built.Based on experimental research on analysis of NC Machine Tools industrial design tasks and ICAID system use tasks, a feasible model of ICAID was built up from several respects such as structure of ICAID system, knowledge presentation of the case, indexing and searching of the case, modification of the case etc.Finally, the paper proposes the key issues about further modification of the ICAID system.
