In this paper, α - pinene from natural product was used for the main original material and pinene epoxides was produced. Copolymerization between epoxides and maleic anhydride was completed by two different polymerization methods (heat and microwave energy induced respectively) with catalysts and without catalysts. New unsaturated polyester was synthesized. Dissolution-precipitation was used in the course of separation and of the copolymer purification and the UV-vis absorption of the upper layer solution obtained from the dissolution-precipitation separations was measured. It shows the absorption regularity of impurity. In the copolymerization without catalyst or with double metal cyanide complex catalysts, the influence of reaction time, reaction temperature and mole ratio on heat polymerization was investigated as well as the dependence of reaction time, microwave power and mole ratio on microwave polymerization. In the copolymerization under the condition of α , α '- bipyridine catalyst, copolymer was synthesized between pinene epoxides and maleic anhydride under room temperature. In this paper, UV-vis spectrum, IR spectrum, viscosity measurement and ~1H NMR spectra of polymer were provided in order to show the characteristic of copolymer between pinene epoxides and maleic anhydride. The following conclusions were drawn in this paper. Without catalyst, reacting 4h under 80°C had the best condition and the quality of products improved greatly. Use of double metal cyanide complex catalysts makes molecule of copolymer increased, and a , a '-bipyridine catalyst makes solid polymer formed. Initial study shows the UV-vis of maleic anhydride keep stable on which UV-vis spectrum in ring-opening copolymerization between pinene epoxides with maleic anhydride. However, the changing of viscosity of the reaction mixture along with the reaction time shows that viscosity ascended continually.
