In this study, the current status of recovering from waste carrier catalyst consisted of complex components were reviewed and summarized. Based on these works a novel procese for recovery of Pt by pyro-hydrometallurgy was developed, which includes: (1) separating the γ-Al2O3 from spent catalysts, (2) decarbonding by burning method, (3) digesting the α -Al2O3 at high-temperature with dissolute NaAlO2 to obtain Pt concentrate, (4) refining the Pt concentrate to produce pure Pt. The principle and parameters of the new method for the process were studied. The economy effects and its influences on environment were evaluated and analyzed as well. The new process has been used to recover Pt form spent catalysts containing Pt 0.186%, Al2O3 83.95% (include α-Al2O3 11.75%) and C 13.95%. A production line for the treatment of spent carrier catalysts with capacity of 200kg/d was set up. A pilot run has showed that this process is adequate for extracting Pt form the waste materials of catalyst and the equipments have been running well and various stable technical targets have been achieved. The grade to Pt in the product is over 99.95%. The recovery of Pt for the whole process has been over 97. 5%. The cost of working is 5500 Yuan RMB per kilogram Pt. The solution containing Al can be used to produce aluminum products. Good economical benefit has been achieved. This process has no the second pollution on environment.
