Beijing-Hangzhou Canal is the only river running N-S in East of China, which is also the longest canal in the world. In history and even now, it plays a very important role in the economic development of the North and the South of China. The Jiangsu Section of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal runs through the whole Jiangsu Province from north to south, and it is not only a very important channel for cities along the canal but also the main water resource to the industry and agriculture. However, the problem of its water environmental protection has not been paid attention to fully. With population's growth and economic development of cities along the canal, water resource maldistribution and water quality have already become the main restriction factor in the economic development. Moreover the East Route of South-North Water Transfer Project has been put into operation now, which utilizes Beijing-Hangzhou Canal as the main water transfer channel, so the security question of water quality of the canal becomes the key factor to the project's success.Environmental monitoring is a basic work in analyzing and evaluating the environmental quality. The environmental monitoring departments of Jiangsu Province have accumulated a large number of customary monitoring data about water environment of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal for many years. Since most of the data can't reach the standardization required by the environmental department, it has not been lucubrated for a long time, especially not combined with the visualization of GIS. So the valuable data couldn't been used fully, moreover it couldn't provide effective references for the environmental administrative department of Canal and also influenced the overall plan of the East Route of South-North Water Transfer Project.Based on the establishment of the environmental centre database of Jiangsu Province, the arrangement of the monitoring data for 10 years of 44 water quality monitoring points , and the systematical collect of materials on nature, society, economy and disposal of pollutants ,etc. along the Jiangsu Section of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, this thesis uses the spatial analysis and visual function of GIS fully to analyze the spatio-temporal change characteristic of the canal water environmental quality and various kinds of influence factors which are studied from three respects, time, space and pollutant. The research makes every effort to show the water quality state and spatio-temporal change characteristic of the Jiangsu Section of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal in the past 10 years objectively. Finally it also studies the variation tendency of main contaminants and characteristic of water quality of the Subei Section of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal with relation to the East Route of South-North Water Transfer Project. The research shows a trend which was taking a favorable turn year by year in the water environmental quality state of the Jiangsu Section of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal during the past 10 years. The pollution distribution also shows obvious characteristics of segmentation, and the most serious pollution locates on Xuzhou Section and SuXiChang Section of the canal. Both ends of the canal are polluted seriously, unchanged, but the pollution in the middle is fine and changeful. Water environmental quality of the canal is mainly determined by the economic development level of the city and disposal of pollutants state along the line, controlled by natural factors and river environment. Since the water environmental system is very complicated, it is difficult to carry on macro-scale researches based on environmental models. In the research of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, the water environmental quality of which is interfered by human frequently, some non-ocular data characteristics and implicit laws could be found easily because of the using of GIS, which has fast, ocular and dynamic advantages in spatial analysis and visualization. And so we can analyze the environmental monitoring data thoroughly. Thisthesis offers valuable references for the canal water environmental management and environmental comprehensive administrations of the canal area, especially for the security problems of water environmental quality of the East Route of South-North Water Transfer Project.
