The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto water-soluble hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) was investigated by using ammonium ceric sulphate (Ce(SO4)2·2(NH4)2SO4) as initiator. The graft copolymer was characterized by IR, TG and XRD. Nano-TiO2/HPC-PMMA composite particles were prepared by nano-TiO2 surface organic modification that first nano-TiO2/HPC particles were obtained from TiO2 wrapped by water soluble HPC, then the graft copolymerization between HPC and MMA (methyl methacrylate) happened on the nano-TiO2/HPC surface using Ce(SO4)2·2(NH4)2SO4 as initiator. Nano-CaCO3/HPC-PMMA composite particles were also prepared with the same method. The composite particles were characterized by IR, TEM and TG. The UV spectra of TiO2/HPC-PMMA were tested. Nano-Fe3O4/P(St-AA) composite microspheres were synthesized under microwave irradiation. SDBS was used to modify the surface of nano-Fe3O4 particles during the course and the diameter of the microspheres was changed with the change of SDBS concentration. The microspheres were characterized by IR, TEM, TG and XRD and their magnetic response property was tested. The formation mechanism of the composite particles was discussed.
