The technology of the finite element method (FEM) has been a strong computational implement in the engineering design field. It increasingly became mature and practical in the past half century. And it is more and more important in all kinds of the engineering design field.This paper uses the advanced finite element method to analyze the transformer-cabinet and sets up a three-dimension model with the tetrahedron element by 10 nodes. It is analyzed respectively through the linear static and nolinear methods. After this model is calculated, the stress field and the deformation field have been got, which conform to the actual. The analytical results indicate that the stress distributing of the transformer-cabinet is uneven, the stress value in the ripples plank and the conjunction part is large and varied greatly. The stress value in the other part is all lower and there is a certain strength storage. The area of biggest deformation occurs in the center of the ripples plank and its value has already outrun the transformer-cabinet design request.By testing research on the spot, it verifies the correctness and reliability of the FEM model and it provides reliable data and technical storage for further researching. Based on above analysis, the author improves the design of the transformer-cabinet and presents kinds of projects. By the finite element method, the best project is gotten. At the same time, by carrying on force analysis, the strength of the flank and the bolt is checked and optimized.After analyzing the stress and deformation by FEM, this paper proves that FEM has a strong vitality. As long as a calculation model can be built up correctly, and the load circumstance and the boundary conditions can be properly simplified, an analysis can be carried on. As an assistant means, FEM has improved on the design work and got rid of the past experiential design method.
