In present paper, the temperature field and the distribution of thermal stress were studied, so that two types of models would be simulated. First model, an infinite sheet with a circular opening; second one, two butt-welded steel boards. In the study of former model, the analytical solutions of steady temperature field and elastic thermal stress were given with the assumption that the mechanical properties of the material don't change with the temperature. Also FEM was introduced to calculate two cases. Firstly, the mechanical properties don't vary with the temperature. Secondly, the case is inversed. The results were compared to demonstrate the accuracy of FEM solution. The influence of the change of the mechanical properties with temperature on the radial stress in the plate was significant. In the study of latter model, simplified computational model was set up. Secondly, the welding stress in the plate was computed by FEM. There was a good argument between the results and that in reference. Tensile stress occurred in the fields near the welding seam in the steel plate. The rationality of the results was verified theoretically.Load bearing capacity of the structure would be influenced directly as a result of welding stress. It is very important to deduce the mechanical behavior and welding stress in the reliability and safety of the welding structure may be assured. The results of this paper are of great significance to scientific research and engineering design.
