For long time, we have only attached much importance to the water demands of our lives and production, while neglected the ecological and environmental water demand. And it has caused a lot of ecological and environmental problems. In our country, environmental problems owing to excesssive exploiting the water resources has become the main obstacle of social and economical sustainable development in many districts. The health of environment is the foundation of the social sustainable development. And water resources are the most important factor of the syetem of ecological environment. So we must consider the ecological and environmental water demand, apart from the water demands of our lives and production, when we exploit water resources.Basing on the summarizing and analyzing present research of the ecological water demand in domestic and abroad, this article has researched the theory and application of the ecological water demand. According to the concrete circumstance of Wuhan City which in humid region, different methods to calculate the ecological and environmental water demand of Wuhan have been taken by writer. And it has predicted requirement of ecological and environmental water in future. It has important signification in theory, and it has done some instructive discussing of how to calculating the ecological water demand. The main contents of this paper are shown as follows:Firstly, the ecological and environmental problems of our country are simply described, and the necessaries to research the ecological and environmental water demand are pointed out. Based on reading a large number of documents, the progress and productions about the environmental water demand are summarized. And the existent shortages are pointed out by writer.Secondly, this chapter has discussed the system info about ecological and environmental water demand. The system info is analyzed from three aspects: bionomics, hydrology and belt theory. It has discriminated some conceptions and connotations about water demand of ecological and environmental. It has put forward environmental water demand having humanism characteristic. The assoeted system about environmental water demand is discussed from two parts.Thirdly, this chapter has researched the calculational methods of the ecological and environmental water demand from four parts which are river, lake, everglade and city. Andit has formed comparatively orbicular and systemic methods to calculate the environmental water demand.Fourthly, based on foregoing methods, combining to the connect conditions of Wuhan city, the ecological and environmental water demand of Wuhan is researched by combined with the idiographic instance of humid region. It has comparatively calculated and predicted the environmental water demand of Wuhan in different years. And it compares them with the water demand of lives and production.Fifthly, according to lots of lakes in Jianghan plain obstructed with rivers nowadays, the significant effect of resuming connectivity lakes with rivers is pointed out. It has elementary calculated the total quoting water of connecting four lakes in Hanyang district from two manners. The two manners are discontinuous and consecutive.Finally, it has comprehensive summarizing the content and applied harvest of this article. The existent problems and some contents needed further research of this article are concluded and prospected by writer.
