The HJ-5 industrial CO2 laser was used to get Ni-based melting alloy coatings what added different contends of rare-earth on 45 steel. The effects of rare-earth on microstructure and properties of Ni-based alloy coatings were investigated. X-ray diffraction result indicates that laser cladding coatings grow as treelike crystal and those matrices were eutectic crystal. Laser cladding coatings are made up with kamacite solid solution, Chromium Carbide, Boron Nickel, Boron Chromium, Iron Boron and so on. New phase doesn't appear after rare-earth is added. Rare-earth changes microstructures of laser cladding coating hardly. Microstructures of laser cladding coating are even and compact. Crystals are petty. Spiracle, defects and inclusions are reduced greatly. Laser cladding coating and matrices are combined well with metallurgical bonding. After rare-earth is added the properties of laser cladding coating such as hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance are increased. The quantities of RE influence the quality of laser cladding coating. The effects of Cerium oxide are better than lanthanum chloride on laser cladding coating.
