This paper is mainly about the study on the polymerization of star-shaped poly(sodium acrylate) redox-initiated with super valence trans-metal Cu(III) and will be discussed in two sections.Chapter I: The present research situation of star-shaped polymers and the present study on graft copolymerization of chitosan were reviewed systematically. In addition, the theoretical and practical significance of Cu(III)'s application in synthesis of star-shaped polymer and graft copolymerization of vinyl monomers onto chitosan were pointed out.Chapter II: Cu(III) as the oxidant, paired with pentaerythritol or dipentaerythritol(in the same time, as the core) as the reducing agent, was used to initiate the polymerization of star-shaped poly(sodium acrylate). The polymerization conditions such as reaction temperature, reaction time, concentrations of initator and monomer have been studied, and the optimistic conditions of reaction were obtained. The overall rate and the overall activation energy of AA-Na polymerization have been determined by gravimetry. Based on, GPC-viscosity, FTIR and HNMR spectra analyses, it followed that star-shaped poly(sodium acrylate) could be synthesized through redox radical polymerization in alkaline medium, and a possible initiate mechanism was proposed.
