By means of fumigating two years old seedlings in chambers, this paper studied the resistance physiology of 11 garden plant species exposed to automobile exhaust and SO2. Measurements on total chlorophyll, Chla/b ratio, proline content, relative conductivity, malondialdehyde content(MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and peroxidase (POD) activity in leaves. During the fumigation, the seedlings were exposed to different pollutant concentrations(0.0 0.3 0.5 0.8 1.2 1.5 2.0mg/m~3) for the same duration( 5d). The results were so follows:1 The tow pollutants could all make total chlorophyll decreasing and Chla/b ratio increasing. And the bigger concentration treatment the more changings could be find.2 After treatment by tow pollutants, SOD activity of tow plants had the same trend of first increasing then decreasing. They reached the peak at the same time and peaks were significant higher than CK. Paniculed Goldraintree SOD had more smart response and tolerance to automobile exhaust and SO2. SOD played an important role in resisting to pollutants. It was a very important physiology index for describing resistance.3 After treatment by tow pollutants, POD activity of tow plants had the same trend of first increasing then decreasing. In automobile exhaust treatment , Manchurian Catalpa had the peak at 1.2mg/m~3 and Paniculed Goldraintree had the peak at 0.8 mg/m~3,they were all significant higher than CK. In SO2 treatment Manchurian Catalpa had the peak at 1.5 mg/m~3and Paniculed Goldraintree had the peak at 0.3 mg/m~3,they were all significant higher than CK, too. POD had feaker correlation with resistance than SOD. But it could cooperate with SOD and the cooperation could be used to describe resistance of plant.4 After treatment by tow pollutants, MDA content and relative conductivity of tow plants were all increasing. It suggested that the membrane lipid had been broken by pollutant. And the bigger concentration treatment the more changings could be find and it took longer time to revive. The tow index could be used to describe resistance of plant as harmful index.5 After treatment by tow pollutants, proline content of tow plants did not take onroutine change with pollutant concentration. But in following experiment the tow species were all appeared accumulate peaks in all concentration treatment. It suggested that it was good for plant organ to accumulate proline. Proline content could be treated as a beneficial index to describe resistance of plant. 6 Subordinate function analysis suggested that the resistance of test trees pecies to automobile exhaust was in order of: Ovate Catalpa > Armand Pine > Bigleave Box > Paniculed Goldraintree > Purpus Privet > Chinese pine > Oriental Planetree > Bunge Pine > White Pine > Manchurian Catalpa > Chinese Buckeye . The resistance of test trees pecies to SO2 was in order of: Bigleave Box > Paniculed Goldraintree > White Pine > Ovate Catalpa > Armand Pine > Bunge Pine > Purpus Privet > Chinese pine > Manchurian Catalpa.
