The halides and tosylates can be oxidized by dimethyl sulfoxide.the method is called Kornblum reaction. It is a very mild oxidation for directly preparing aldehydes. We focused on the oxidation effect of this method on alkyl chlorides:DMSOThrough comparing with the reaction results of ten different chlorides we found that under the normal heating mode the benzyl chloride which had the electron-donating group on the aromatic ring react easily and get the high yield, but the ones which had the electron-withdrawing group react hardly and its yield reduce. The aliphatic chlorides can't react under the condition. Then we studied the effect of microwave on Kornblum reaction, found that microwave can not only enhance the reaction rate considerably, but also change the kinetic characteristic. So some unreactive chlorides in normal conditions can be oxidized by dimethyl sulfoxide under microwave. At the same time as basal research, Kornblum reaction was used for the industrialization of 2,4,6-trimethylbenzaldehyde.It made the route simple and easy to realize. So we confirmed that Kornblum reaction as a method to prepare the aldehydes have good applied value.
