Rolling exploration and development is a kind of methodology or work procedure in which the exploration and development proceed in a chained way, and is an important mode of exploration and development aimed at enhancing proven reserve and increasing the production. Against a background of exploratory breakthrough in the Upper Wuerhe Formation reservoir in the 5th district of Karamay oil field, and focusing on the key issues of development of this reservoir, the present work integrates seismic, well logging, geological and reservoir engineering theories and methods to study comprehensively and systematically the structure, reservoir rocks, distribution of oil, gas and water in the district and development techniques and strategy suitable for this specific reservoir, and certain important conclusions are made and better understanding is acquired.Achievements of this work include: the use of the rolling reservoir description method in which multi-discipline studies are integrated with site tracing, detailed depict of the structure and distribution of faults in the reservoir, putting forward the novel realization of faults being the major controlling factor of oil-gas distribution within the reservoir, which has effectively guided the well-site locating in the reservoir and has been regarded as a new model for utilizing the hard-to-recover reserve.Creative results of this study include :putting forward and having carried out important technical strategy for the rolling exploration and development, which has made the target area the best of the whole Xinjiang Oilfield in terms of fulfilling the production task and utilizing the hard-to-recover reserve in theyears 2002.Important conclusions of this work include: for pools with multiple pay zones and low permeability, the appropriate application of rolling exploration and development technique can lead to increased exploration and development efficiency.
