Fiber-reinforced resin matrix composites (FRRMC) are widely used for aeronautic and space applications due to their low weight, high strength, good ablation resistance and good dimension stability. Because the FRRMC contain two phases of materials with drastically distinguished mechanical properties which are the matrix and the fiber, the cutting surfaces of the FRRMC appear anisotropy which distinctly distinguishes from the isotropy properties of the metal materials. The measurement methods and the assessment criterion of the metal materials' cut surfaces are not suitable for FRRMC. However, there is little research work on this aspect in domestic. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a measurement method and assessment criterion for FRRMC.In this research, based on the analysis of the experimental results, the cutting process and the cutting surfaces assessment of four kinds materials of the FRRMC, which include the c/c composite, the knit c/ph composite, the coat c/ph and the high-silica glass fiber composite, are studied. The main studies are as follows: (1) Comparative experiments of the 2D profile measurement and the 3D micro-topographical measurement have been carried out. Based on the experimental results, the 3D measurement as the method to measure the cutting surfaces of FRRMC are chosen. (3) Distinguishing the two measurement methods by the contact stylus and the non-contact laser, the latter is chosen. The measurement conditions, such as the measurement direction, the sampling conditions (including the speed, the area and interval of the sampling), measurement methods of the turning column surfaces, etc. are determined. (3) The effects of the cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut, the corner radius and material of the cutting tool on cutting surface qualities are studied. The differences between the FRRMC cutting and the metal materials cutting are discussed. (4) Based on the sensitive analysis of the 3D parameters to the sampling conditions, the insensitive parameters are chosen. The criterion series of these parameters are established, and their feasibility is validated by experiments. Finally, query system of the criterion series is established. The study benefits the design, manufacture and the application in the composites field. It is also valuable for forming an assessment criterion of other kinds of composites.
