With the devolopement of titanium industry, shortage of natural rutile has encouraged research efforts to convert synthetic rutile into ilmenite for the titanium produts. Ilmenite has been becoming a huge resource of rutile for the production of titanium dioxide. Because of it's low grade of titania, ilmenite must be pre-enriched to titania slag and then applied in titanium industry. According to the national conditions, the search for a simple and economic extraction method remains of high interest to industry. In this experiment, an ilmenite concentrate was supplied by Titanium Industry Co. of Pangang Co. LTD.With the purpose of obtaining high grade titania slag, we have researched the reduction mechanism of ilmenite and found out the reasons why this kind of ilmenite is hard to reduce. In the experiment we found that preoxidation affects the phase composition, morphology of ilmenite concentrates and accelerats the reduction of iron oxides in ilmenite concentrates. Some additives can enhance the reduction and the effect of KS is the most obvious. The main functions of KS are: 1) The sodium in KS changes the crystal lattice of FeTiO3 and decreaces the activation energy. 2) KS destroys the bulwark surrounding at the unreacted ilmenite. The separation experiment of the reduction product is also have beencarried out. The test results show that the grade of the titanium slag produced by magnetic separation reachs 73.57% when the grain size in raw material is 97.00% -0.074mm, the magnetic intensity is 1.5 X 105A.m"', the reduction temperature of ilmenite is 11001150°C, and the reduction time is 3.5-4.0h. The grade of the titania slag produced by rusting separation reachs 83.23% when the metallic iron, present in reduced ilmenite, is oxidized by air in a suspension of aqueous consisting of 0.5% NH4CI and 1.5% HC1, and the rusting temperature is 70 °C, rusting time is 9h, solid-to-liquid ratio is 1:10, grain size of raw material is 0lmm, the reduction temperature of ilmenite is 1100 1150°C, and the recovery time is 2.02.5h.
