A special-purpose automatic welding equipment was designed and developed according to the requirement of thick-thin steel plate welding of container crane box beam. The box beam was one of the most important stress parts of the crane which required high quality butt weld. Single face welding and double face shaping equipment was designed based on two wing plates and web plate welding requests in two kinds of different models box beams. The project was adopted that the workpiece was fixed and the welding torch was moved. Firstly, the workpiece with multi-strip welded joint was located and compacted in turn. Secondly, the dragon gate was migrated to find different welded joints. Then operator can start to weld in turn. When all welding joints were completed, the pressing sections were removed and the working was over. At last new workpiece was placed and new welding process was carried on.In order to guarantee the welding quality, to improve the production efficiency, and to make the operation easy, particular location and compaction devices used the cams was designed. It can be operated in two directions. As cams revolved in one direction it can hold down effectively. On the other hand it can lift and maintain the organization as cams revolved in the reversed direction. One kind of novel welding centring device was used to ensure that the welding torch was fast centered on the welded joint in different positions. Welding vehicle was driven by step motor and gears treading on the linear guide track. The stabilization of the welding speed and the precision of control and adjustment were better. In welding process, the procedure control, welding craft parameters' set and so on, have been digitized completely. Considering that in automatic welding, there were a large number of parameters and their optimization and adjustment were difficult, a special way of memorization of standard welding parameters was designed. The single chip system with ATmega16 as the dominative chip was applied as the system to control the whole equipment. In the system, ATmega16 was the key because it has many ports, which satisfied the requirement of the control of many controlled devices. The program was mainly composed of condition sentences and interruption form to fit for the movement relations of the many devices.After being manufactured and installed completely, the entire equipment has been debugged and welded. The welding parameters were determined in the course of samples' welding. Now the design requirements have been achieved. The equipment runs well and has been applied in the production of enterprises.
