Hard and brittle materials are widely applied to all sorts of fields, such asmechanics, electron, aviation, automobile for they have good performance that is highstrength, resistance to elevated temperature, stand wear and tear, corrosion resistantetc. But to machining them is difficult, inefficient and high-cost for their goodperformance. As a result, their extensive use is limited. With the development ofscience and technology, non-conventional machining methods emerge as the timesrequire and their development is all right. Rotary ultrasonic machining is one ofnon-conventional machining and it has been effective means to machining hard andbrittle materials and. At present, its field of application is wider and wider. In contrastwith conventional ultrasonic machining, its machining efficiency is increased.By the analysis of special ultrasonic machine tools, conclusions can be drawn inthis paper. They are high-cost, bulk mass, narrow scope of application. As a result, anew type of rotary ultrasonic composite grinding head was developed. It can beassembled on the numerical control machine, drill machine and vertical millingmachine so that it can gain its end of ultrasonic machining. It can match up todifferent colter arm in response to different machine tool in order to strengthen itspracticability.The theoretical basis on ultrasonic sound system design was introduced in thispaper. And ladder horn's and composite horn's structural analysis and dynamicsanalysis were finished by software ANSYS in this paper.In addition, serial design on sound system is made in order to satisfy the need ofdifferent user. And fundamental mode is the structure which power is 250W.Experiments were made in this paper in order to certify if grinding head issatisfactory. They are as follows: the feasibility of the structure is confirmed;machining efficiency and surface quality under the difference condition are analyzed;open questions in course of ultrasonic grinding machining were discussed.
