Water resource shortage and pollution have become one of main factors thatobstruct the development of Chinese economy. Wastewater reuse is an effective wayto solve these two problems at one time. Municipal wastewater is considered as akind of potential water resource with large quantity and relatively stabile quality.Reuse of municipal wastewater can not only satisfy the demand of water for humansociety, but also save the valuable fresh water, mitigate water pollution. This practiceis of great potential.In this research, domestic continuous microfiltration (CMF) equipment wasstudied to produce reclaimed water, and some basic work was done to investigateoperational parameters for domestic CMF.The research is divided into three parts. In the first part the quality of the influentto and the effluent from domestic CMF was studied. The test result shows that theremoval of SS, total count of bacteria and E. coli is efficient, and the effluent qualitycan meet the pretreatment requirement for reverse osmosis (RO). In the second part,the quality of the effluent from both domestic and imported CMF was compared.During this period of time, the performance of domestic CMF was stable and effluentquality is similar to that from imported equipment. In the third part the reasons andcauses of CMF membrane fouling was analyzed. The appropriate cleaning methodand cleaning cycle were tested. The experimental result shows that acid cleaning ismore efficient at the low water temperature and alkali cleaning is more efficient atwater temperature above 25oC. It is suggested that the interval of chemical cleaning iscontrolled by the drop degree of the flux of membrane.Through one year's study, the results show that the quality of the effluent fromdomestic CMF can meet the technical requirement for RO equipment. Compare toimported CMF equipment, domestic CMF has great advantages in the capitalinvestment and operation cost. It is feasible to replace the imported CMF withdomestic one.
