Polymer/layered silicate(PLS) nanocomposites are a new class of compositeswhich have attracted considerable attention. Recent research about those compositesfocus on montmorillonite (MMT) and vermiculite. The study aboutpolymer/phlogopite nanocomposites has seldom been reported. The reason is thatphlogopite's layer charge density is higher than MMT and vermiculite. So phlogopite'layer cations is difiicult to be exchanged. Some scientists found that after some kindsof acid treatment and calcinations, phlogopite and vermiculite's layer charge densitycould be reduced. So it is believed that the similar treatments will have same effect onphlogopite to Preparate polymer /phlogopite nanocomposites.This dissertation is composed of two parts. In the first part, the phlogopite issubmitted to an acid treatment followed by calcinations. These treatments lead to apermanent reduction of the high net negative charge of the mineral layers.The solid isconverted to the sodium form by ion exchange. XRD patterns show that the interlayerspacing of the organic phlogopite is expanded from 1.0nm to 1.2nm. Organicphlogopite is prepared by intercalating with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide.XRD patterns show that the interlayer spacing of the organic phlogopite is expandedto about 3.2nm.In the second part, epoxy resin /phlogopite nanocomposites are prepared bysolidifying of epoxy containing dispersed organophilic phlogopite. There is nocharacteristic phlogopite peak in the XRD pattern for epoxy resin /phlogopitenanocomposites. When the content of phlogopite is about 1wt%, the tensile strengthof nanocomposites increased about 32.33%, the flexural strength increased about53.77% and the impact strength increased about 127%, compared to that of pureepoxy resin. The surface conductivity and volume conductivity of nanocomposites are2~4 orders higher than that of pure epoxy resin respectively.
