In this work, the thick Ti/TiN multilayer coatings were successfully deposited onto Ti-6A1-4V (TC4) and high-speed steel (HSS) by the arc ion plating process. The effects of different substrate and the relative quantity of metallic Ti in the coatings on the coating properties were investigated. The results show that the coating structure, mechanic, friction and wear properties of thick Ti/TiN multilayer coatings do not apparently depend on the substrate under the same deposition parameters. However, for the same matrix, these properties are strongly influenced by the relative quantity of metallic Ti in the coatings. The adhesion between coating and matrix increases with the relative amount of metallic Ti in the coatings. The wear rate of the coatings increases with the relative amount of metallic Ti in the coatings.
