Pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB), a highly toxic organochlorine fungicide, is widelypresented in water and soil. The discharge of PCNB contaminated water causes greatenvironmental concern. Treatment of wastewaters contaminated with PCNB is very difficult, since the strong electron-deficient character of its nitro-group and biologic toxicity of itschloric-group causes it resistant to bio-and chemistry treatment. Therefore, effectivealternative methods for the removal of PCNB from wastewaters should be pursued. In thiswork, the radiation-induced degradation of PCNB under 60Co γ-ray source and differentconditions was investigated. In this paper, various treatment effect of simulate wastewater containing PCNB wereinvestigated and the differences of the radiation degradation percentage were studied. Theeffect of pollutant concentration, absorbed dose, influence of pH, synergistic effect ofradiation (adding H2O2 and TiO2 in the solution), the impurity (like salts in solvents) inexistence, synergistic degradation with other fungicides were discussed in this paper.Experiments show that all treatment methods used in paper can eliminated the PCNBwhich is difficult for degradation. The results show higher absorbed dose brings higherdegradation;moderate pollutant concentration acquires the highest degradation;degradationpercentage is higher at acidic solution than alkaline solution;degradation will increase withthe adding nano titania particles;but additive H2O2 could hinder the degradation.Furthermore, GC-MS analysis was carried out to identify the degradation products ofPCNB, compounds that nitro-group and chloric-group was removed could be detected, thefinal degradation products are H2O and CO2 according to literature.Information about the degradation of PCNB by 60Co γ-ray irradiation in aqueous solutionis the subject of few research studies. The work we did and discussed in this article is to offeran efficient method to treat fungicide manufactory wastewater.
