The Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber is widely used as the precursor of carbon fiber (CF), which is because of the simple processing, the low manufacturing cost and the excellent mechanical properties. The microstructure of the PAN precursors could strongly affect on the structure of the CF, also the heat treatment of the precursor could dramatically change the chemical and physical structure of the fiber. It is obviously very important to study on these key processes. This may have some help with the optimization of the precursor process and the improvement of the oxidation process, also the high quality of the CF production. In this study, a systematic study of PAN precursor and preoxidized fiber was studied by using the combinations of the experimental techniques which includes two-dimensional image, powder diffraction and pole figure, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and sound-velocity method. Through the theoretically study it reveals the relationship between the orientation structure and properties of PAN precursor and preoxidized fiber.
