On account of some limitations of single crystal and glasses as the laser materials, the transparent YAG ceramics doped with Nd ions were synthesized by the precursor calcination method to provide a novel laser material. The precursor was obtained by co-precipitation method, with urea and carbonate served as precipitant. After calcined at 1100℃ and 1000℃ respectively, poly-crystalline Nd:YAG powder with even size distribution and good performances is obtained. The transmittance of final product sintered at 1780℃ is about 60%.The preparation techniques of transparent ceramics, the mechanism of liquid co-precipitation and transparent ceramics calcination were discussed systemically in this paper. Through the TG-DTA and XRD analysis, the optimum calcination temperature of precursor with complete crystallization and proper particle size was also discussed. The infrared spectra of the precursor before and after calcination were well investigated and the peaks were ascribed appropriately. The absorption spectrum and fluorescence spectrum were measured to characterize the final product of poly-crystalline ceramics, also the factors of transmittance was discussed.
